Some guitars have pickups to convert the vibration of the steel chord strings into electrical current and these types of guitars are called as electric guitars. In many popular styles of music like jazz, blues, rock and roll, country music electric guitars are used. It is even used in contemporary classical music. Many famous musicians enjoy playing on the electric guitars.

In the year 1932, the guitarist Kansas of Wichita performed with the electric guitar for the first time. The first solid body electric guitars was invented by Lespaul in the year 1942. In the year 1950, Leo fender designed the first commercially successful solid body electric guitar with a single magnetic pick up. It was named as the Esquire.

The movements of the strings in the electric guitar induce a very small electrical current in the magnetic pick-ups and make very clear sound. All the magnetic pick-ups usually pick up the unwanted electromagnetic noises. In an electric guitar, the unwanted noises are eliminated. Induced currents and circuits are the main working principles of electric guitars. In an electric guitar, the coils are wrapped with very fine wire and are under the ferromagnetic string.

Unlike acoustic guitars, the bodies of the electric guitars are very solid and do not have any holes to accommodate vibration. Electric guitars are made of hard wood with a lacquer coating and have six steel strings. In any music that features electric guitar the audible sound is produced by pick-ups that convert the vibrations into an electrical signal.

This electrical signal is passed on to an amplifier and then to a speaker. Electric guitars have necks that vary according to the composition as well as its shape. There are different neck shapes as C necks and v-necks. The cut of the neck can help to define the particular sound that the electric guitar makes.

There are many strings and each musician play on different strings. Tiny Grimes is a noted four-string player.

Another type of electric guitar is the hollow body electric guitar. These have pick ups mounted on its body. The hollow body electric guitar works in a same way as the old body electric guitar. The only difference is that when the hollow bodies vibrate the pick-ups and convert the body vibration in to an electric signal.

Electric guitars can be played either solo or with any other instruments. It is popularly used in pop music and even classical music. A student of academy of science completed the largest electric guitar and technology in the year 2000.This electric guitar measures 13 metres long, and weighs 1018 kilograms.

Victor Epand asked:

The electric guitar has long been used in many popular styles of music, including almost all genres of rock and roll, country music, jazz, blues, ambient and even contemporary classical music. It uses pickups to convert the vibration of its steel-cored strings into electrical current, which is then amplified.

The electric guitar can be played either solo or with other instruments. It has been used in numerous genres of popular music, as well as classical music.

Different types of electric guitars

There are various types of this popular instrument available in the market. While shopping for an electric guitar for one’s personal use, the decision should be carefully taken about which one will be the right choice and make. The types include:

Solid body
These guitars have holes for neither sound nor an internal cavity to accommodate vibration, such as those used to amplify string vibrations in acoustic guitars. They are generally made of hardwood with a lacquer coating and have 6 steel strings.

Hollow body
These guitars have a hollow body and electronic pickups mounted on its body. The hollow body vibrates and the pickups convert a combination of string and body vibration into an electrical signal.

Electric-acoustic
In these guitars the pickups do not produce a signal directly from the vibration of the strings, but rather from the vibration of the guitar top or body. So,these are also called acoustic guitars.

Seven-string
Seven string electric guitars were popularized in the 1980s.

Eight string
Eight string guitars are rare, but not unused.

Twelve string
Twelve string instruments feature six pairs of strings, usually with each pair tuned to the same note.

Apart from these there are few other types of these popular makes available in the market which are bought according to their requirement.

Selecting the right kind of electric guitar

The primary reason for buying a guitar will be playing it. But one would also look for something whose resale value will increase in time. Craftsmanship is an important element in the future value of this instrument.

Areas that require special skills, such as binding, finishing, hand shaping and inlaid work, are forever expensive and will enhance the value of guitars in the future.

Thus things to look for while buying an electric guitar will be

Good Tone Wood
Although the sound of a good guitar would seem to come entirely from the pickup, the type of wood has an important influence on tone and sustenance.

Noise free instrument
The pickups on guitars and basses should be shielded from extraneous electronic sources that can cause humming and buzzing. And they should be covered in wax or epoxy to prevent micro phonic feedback.

Checking out the Neck Joint
The neck joint should be tight and rigid so that none of the string vibration is transferred to the neck.

Testing the sustenance
An electric guitar with greater rigidity and weight, such as a solid body, will sustain longer than one with less rigidity, such as a hollow body.

Checking out the bridge
The bridge maintains intonation and action of string height. Adjusting the truss rod or changing string gauge can change intonation or action.

The Truss rod
An adjustable truss rod can correct any changes in neck curvature.

These are the basic and most important factors to be considered. But, there are various other factors to be considered while shopping for an electric version. And while buying one should remember that a good guitar is for a lifetime.

Originally guitars were all acoustic, and the volume achievable by such guitars was quite enough for the environments in which they were played. However, as music developed and the locations in which it performed grew larger, and with the introduction of accompanying instruments, it became necessary to increase the volume and sound of the guitar. Especially with jazz gaining in popularity, the brass instruments would simply drown out the guitar, and so solutions had to be found.

It was Les Paul, a major innovator in the world of guitars, experimented with attaching microphones to guitars, and this led to some of the earliest electric guitars, although these were generally simply hollow acoustic guitars with tungsten pickups. In 1931 these were being manufactured by the Electro String Instrument Corporation, and the design of an acoustic guitar with a hollow body and a tungsten pickup was devised by Harry Watson, and this model was called the Rickenbacker. This was officially the very first electric guitar, although still a very long way off the ones we see today. Although they were used, and popular, straight away, the first documented record of an early electric guitar being used in a public performance was in Kansas in 1932, when Gage Brewer helped to publicise this new type of guitar in a special Halloween performance.

The first recording of an electric guitar is often attributed to Eddie Durham, but in fact this is incorrect, and fifteen days earlier George Barnes, a jazz guitarist, recorded Sweetheart Land and It’s a Low-Down Dirty Shame in Chicago in 1938. It was Durham, however, who introduced the early electric guitar to Charlie Christian, who became one of the most significant influences for many decades on electric guitars in jazz music.

The electric guitar we know and recognise today usually has a solid body, although not always. The solid body electric guitar is made of wood - often a single piece where possible. The earliest solid body electric guitar was not made of wood however, and was in fact made of cast aluminium, with steel strings. This was officially named the Rickenbacker, but was more commonly referred to as the Frying Pan or Pancake Guitar for obvious reasons. The sound of this guitar was quite aggressive, with a very modern feel to its voice.

In the 1940s Les Paul was still developing ideas for the electric guitar, and in his own time he created the log guitar, which derived its name from the fact that it was constructed from a simple 4×4 wooden post, with a neck attached to one end. The pickups were home made, and there were two halves of the body attached purely for appearance sake. This guitar was patented, and was the first of its kind, although the Gibson Electric Guitar designed later by Les Paul shares no characteristics at all, and it seems to have been a one off.

The next major development in the world of the electric guitar was in the mid 1940s when Richard D Bourgerie, who was employed making electrical equipment during the second World War for the US military at the Howard Radio Company, created an electric guitar pickup and amplifier combination for George Barnes. Barnes in turn showed this new design to Les Paul who requested another be constructed for himself.

Today there seem to be as many different makes and models of electric guitar as there are players, and if you are entering the world of the electric guitar yourself for the first time, you may be slightly taken aback by the sheer range of options, features and designs available. Essentially, however, they all share more or less the same basic features, with a body that is either solid or hollow, usually six steel strings, and perhaps the biggest and most significant choice, the pickup. Depending upon the type of pickup, the guitar may well sound quite different, and this is perhaps the one place to look most carefully.

Richard Neesal asked:

The actual date and time of the invention of the electric guitar hasn’t ever been recognized, although it was first seen in the early 1930’s by members of orchestras and musicians. The inventors of the electric guitar at that time, who were electronically minded individuals, realized that the guitar needed to be amplified to produce louder sounds in noisy venues and to be able to be heard alongside other instruments.

The reason for this of course was due to the fact that at the time, many of the musical instruments at that time were often made of brass. With this being the case, acoustic guitars would simply not be heard in a band. This frustrated many of the musicians, because the guitar was a popular instrument and was simply being pushed out of the music place.

The version of the instrument that is best known today is the solid body electric guitar, a guitar made of solid wood, without resonating airspaces within it. The electric guitar of this type has an innovation of technology which includes a pickup of some kind that actually causes the vibration from the strings being played to sound through some kind of amplifier. Obviously, the amplifier for the electric guitar was also an issue and the earliest of these often had tubes as televisions did during that time period.

Electric guitars in history have been rather heavy due to the inner components. Over the past few decades the electric guitar has been getting lighter and lighter. The electric guitar and the components are essentially made out of not only lighter wood, but the actual pickup is smaller. This allows for a bigger sound. In fact, some of these electric guitars are even becoming digital in many different aspects of the overall design of the electric guitar.

There are many web sites dedicated to the concept of the electric guitar, and those that are sold today are reasonable and affordable. It is for this reason that so many individuals today are learning to play the electric guitar more. According to statistics the number of those individuals who play the electric guitar has increased tremendously over the past decade alone. With the history of the electric guitar so long ago, the design of the body of the electric guitar has changed too. There are many different colors for the electric guitar now.

There are also those that are considered cut-outs. Cut-outs are those electric style guitars that literally have portions of the body removed for appearance. Depending on where or what type of music the guitar is going to play will usually vary in the appearance and color of the electric guitar.

Electric guitars are found in most bands today. From classical music, rock music and other styles, to ultimately country music that often used acoustic guitars in times past. Many of the electric guitars now also have add-ons or pedals for the guitar that can essentially make the electric guitar sound like any instrument. This is a big advancement from the 1930’s when the entire idea of an electric guitar was simply so it could be heard among the other instruments in a band.

Peter Clark asked:

Just about every kid ever born wants to be a rock star. They see their favorite stars up there on stage playing the electric guitar to a crowd and want to do the same. Problem is, it’s not easy learning to play the electric guitar. And of course before you learn to play the guitar you need to own a guitar, or at least borrow one. When you’re just starting out learning the electric guitar you don’t need one like Jimmy Hendrix would play, but you still need to get your hands on an electric guitar that will be adequate for the beginner. And if that’s you then there’s a few things that you need to know about electric guitars that may help in understanding a little more about them. First thing to remember about buying your first electric guitar is that you don’t need to spend hundreds of thousands to do so. Be happy with a cheap electric guitar while you’re learning, and maybe once you hit the big time spend up big. However a cheap electric guitar will do the job for the first few years. You also need to know exactly what style of music you will be playing on your guitar. Different styles of music require different styles of electric guitar. You need a different guitar to play rock, for example, to the guitar you’d buy if you were playing jazz.So spend a little time researching the types of electric guitar that should be used by different music styles.Electric guitar types boil down to 2 basic types, solid body and hollow body. As the name suggests a solid body guitar has no hollow space inside, and is usually, though not exclusively, made of solid wood. Different types of timber can produce different sounds, so as you get better you may want to research more on the type of timber you need to produce the sound you want, but in the early stages if you’re buying a cheap electric guitar don’t get too carried away getting the ideal timber, you may find it more expensive than you need to be paying, and it’s not essential at the start. And there’s a few unusual terms you’ll need to become familiar with if you’re buying an electric guitar for the first time. Here’s a taste.Pickups. The pickup is a magnet with a coil of wire wrapped around it placed right under the strings. This receives the vibrations of the strings and turns these into an electric signal for the amp to use. There are 2 types of pickup. The single coil, which produces a sound that sounds good for playing rock, blues and country. Humbuckers are a pickup with 2 coils next to each other that produces a warmer sound which is great for metal and rock in particular. Some guitars have a combination of single coils and humbuckers, and there is usually at least 2 pickups utilized.Bridge. The bridge is where the strings connect to the body of the guitar. You can have a fixed bridge or a Vibrato bridge which allows you to move the bridge to tighten or loosen the strings. The fixed bridge is better for beginners who can graduate to a Vibrato bridge after they’ve mastered the basics.Hollow body electric guitars are the second basic style of guitar. These, as the name suggests, have a hollow body although there is also a variation of this which is the semi hollow. As the player plays his guitar the hollow space helps the body resonate which produces a quite distinctive sound. These are good guitars for jazz. These hollow body guitars also utilize pickups, including single coil and humbucker. That’s really just the start when it comes to understanding electric guitars, and for the enthusiast it’s a lifetime job learning all there is to know about them. And finding out exactly what it is that you need to play to produce exactly the sound you want to produce. That’s part of the fun of playing the guitar, it’s a constant learning process, not just about how to play but what to play as well. However remember, the most important piece of advice. If you’re a beginner don’t spend up big the first time. Buy yourself a cheap electric guitar first, then learn to play that and take it from there. It’s the best way to kick off your rock star career.

Richard Neesal asked:

Choosing the right electric guitar relies on many different factors such as the type of music that is going to be played, how often the guitar will be played and where.

For those learning to play the electric guitar, finding a good one to learn on is important, especially when knowing the fingers are going to have to toughen up a bit. And the easier the electric guitar is to play the better.

Many individuals that have played different electric guitars will tell you that not all guitars play or handle the same. For example, the strings and how hard they must be pressed have a great deal to do with the overall decision of purchasing an electric guitar.
Electric guitars can’t be simply be taken anywhere. So the location of where they are going to be played will require power of some type.

In addition, when choosing an electric guitar an individual has to take into consideration the amplifier that will be used in order to play the guitar. The guitar must sound right when it comes through the amplifier. Many electric guitars are being sold today with the option of actually purchasing the amplifier for a specific guitar. There are some electric guitars that just won’t sound right unless they are in fact sold with a certain amplifier.

There are also many band members that will tell you that in choosing the right electric guitar, weight should be a factor too. There are those brands of electric guitars that are lighter than others. There are also electric guitars on the market today designed especially for youth or young adults. In these circumstances the electric guitar is considerably lighter.

Some web sites via the Internet also have a wide assortment of different electric guitars that individuals and consumers can actually purchase via the Internet. Unfortunately, this doesn’t allow the individual to feel the weight or style of the guitar. Only the image can be seen on the web site and a description essentially given about the electric guitar.

Many of the music stores today usually have all the information an individual would need in order to choose the right electric guitar. The salespeople are usually helpful in knowing about the various electric guitars. In many stores, it is also possible for a consumer or customer to try the guitar out before the guitar is actually purchased, though this isn’t the case in all stores.

Victor Epand asked:

Plugged in music? Want to play a trendy, smart instrument? Are you in search of a perfect sound? Then electric guitar is just the thing for you.

During the era of big band, an instrument was necessary who can compete with the large volume instruments used in the jazz concerts of 30s and 40s.And that is why electric guitars were invented.

Electric guitars have a very interesting history. The string instrument makers, people who are enthusiastic about electronics and instrument manufacturers have designed it. They designed it in different combinations.

The pre historic guitar had a twang sound. Then the quest for a different sound began that led to the birth of an electric guitar, which had an amplifying horn in mid 20’s of the last century. During 1920 and 24, Lloyd Loar invented the first pick up. In 1936, mass production of electric Spanish guitar (ES 150) begun. Jazz musician Charlie Christian used to play this guitar. In the year 1943, Leo Fender created a solid body electric guitar with oak wood

In the 1950s, different kinds of electric guitars like Explorer, Flying v were invented. After these inventions, electric guitars started to fly higher. Many famous musicians, like Bob Dylan, Jimmy Hendrix, BB King, Chuck berry popularized the electric guitars.

Bands like Guns and Roses, Europe, Queen, Deep purple also popularized this instrument.

Electric guitars are very different from that of other string instruments. This is one string instrument where you can play both the lead and the rhythm portion. This is actually a type of instrument where the vibration that comes from its strings converts into electrical current. And it is being amplified, that gives a metallic tone to them.

The tones of electric guitars can be changed. To do this, you need a gazette called processor. This processor offers you different kinds of tones. You can mix two or more tones or create some of your own tones with the help of the processor. There are several other tricks also, that can be done by the electric guitar. Like, distortion, tremolo etc.

This instrument was basically associated with rock music. But as time moved on it tied its knot with several other kind of music like jazz, blues, country music, rock n roll etc. It can be said that electric guitar has become an indispensable part of the 20th century music.

The first performance with an electric guitar was during the year 1932 in Wichita, Kansas. George Barnes was the first person to use an electric guitar in recording. He was the one who recorded two songs in Chicago on 1st March, in the year 1938.

In today’s music scenario, electric guitars are gaining more and more importance. Today, we cannot imagine a music show without them. As the instrument got popular, the players also started getting noticed by the public. Even now they are so popular that we first notice the guitar player than any other musician in a music show. Electric guitars are no more under dogs, but it can be said that they are now ruling the instrumental world.

Matt Stotts asked:

Buying Guide for Electric Guitars

What to look for when buying an electric guitar – getting the most value for the money whether you choose to buy new or used.

Who hasn’t dreamed of playing an electric guitar in front of thousands of screaming fans? Well before you can be the next Jimi Hendrix you must first buy a quality guitar. Any electric guitar for sale belongs to one of three basic body styles: solid-body, semi-hollow, and hollow-body. The solid body electric guitar is a good choice when loud, sustained amplification and lots of effects is the desired sound one is looking for. The semi-hollow body guitar is useful when more of an acoustic sound, with high levels of amplification is required. The typical hollow-body, or jazz guitar you’ll find for sale provides the acoustic sound plus an electric sound when plugged into an amplifier, but these hollow-body guitars can be prone to feedback at high levels of amplification.

Your main determining factor for choosing a guitar will be how much you are willing to spend. The choices available today are limitless in styles, features, and the all important price tag. If you are new to the guitar, you’ll be surprised at just how well a “budget” or even used instruments sounds. Most “cheap” electrics are solid-body, and will carry a price of between $100 to $300 dollars. A great source of used affordable equipment can be found on eBay.com; you can find great deals on quality guitars there. Another perfect resource for new guitar players is how-to-guitar.com. This site has a wonderful buyers guide, and really covers all aspects of buying, playing, and building an electric guitar. I highly recommend that site for any “newbie’s” to the electric guitar.

Buying Your First Electric Guitar

Buying a guitar can be very exciting if you do the appropriate research before hitting the online stores. The answer to whether you buy new or used will depend on your budget and the quality of guitar you wish to purchase. There are many brands and models of guitars for sale and you must do your due diligence before settling on a particular instrument. And once you have browsed the selections and made a purchase, then the real excitement begins as you feel the rush of mastering this most perfect instrument

The evolution of electric guitar has brought about a revolutionary change to the world of music. Because of its exceptional features electric guitar has almost surpassed the acoustic guitar. Today musicians using electric guitar are more at liberty to play creatively and express their own individual styles.

But, with more and more music companies coming up with wide range of guitars, choosing the right guitar that could fulfil all music needs are a challenging affair.

Since deciding to invest on buying an instrument is quite significant, some careful steps are to be taken before selecting the instrument. Especially for the starters, finding the right electrical guitar can be a really difficult task.

However, the choices may vary from person to person. Every guitar may sound and feel different to every individual. But, all new buyers will be eager to find the best electric guitar. Therefore before purchasing one should be confident about his choice and do research and analysis through different sources– may be Internet, professional players or advice from the retailers. So by analysing the recommendations and reviews from customers and technical experts one find out the best electric guitar that could suit his taste.

One cannot stick to a fixed set of guidelines for buying a guitar. But definitely cost would matter for the beginners. A beginner usually considers sound, hardware quality and the feel before choosing a guitar. Above all it is a natural tendency for a buyer to choose that electric guitar which can give a pleasant sound and good feel to him.

Before buying an electric guitar the buyers should also check the wood quality and hardware of the instrument. Ignore the looks; it should be made of good quality wood. In fact there are numerous cost effective electric guitars for beginners. Above everything before buying an electric guitar one should ensure whether the retailer gives on-going support or not, because electric guitars often break, regardless of its quality.

That is why before finally deciding to buy an electric guitar one should look in to certain things, such as brand names on other parts of the guitar, for example the tuners or pickups, whether they are from reputed companies or not and the wood quality. Apart from it one should avoid buying from unknown sources and refer to the guitars played by professionals.
